Archive Photographs

I have tried to include as many photographs in this archive as possible. Not all previous photos will be included because of the danger of repetition but I trust enough will be shown to keep you, the viewer, interested. Selsey has been my home for nearly 45 years now, having moved down from Preston in my youth. I feel that I have nearly earned the title of a 'local', but being married to a true local has helped with this aspiration. The half century has seen many changes in Selsey, and not all for the good, however, we have to encompass change and accept that we have to move with the times.

The threat from the sea is very real and just today (28th May 2008) the latest offering from the Environment Agency has been published outlining proposals for the defence or otherwise, of Selsey. The main threat is to the Medmerry beach, the East beach having had a sea wall built in the 50's. Time will tell if any of the proposals are carried out. They (our lords and masters) have been talking and carrying out surveys and forums and meetings and generally   pontificating for as long as I have been in Selsey, however, no direct action has taken place other than 'defend the line' along the Medmerry beach. Defend the line means let the sea take the shingle away. Get a dredger to suck it up again out of the sea, unload it at Littlehampton, transport it to Selsey, chuck it onto the beach, and then begin the whole cycle again. They have been doing this for years, you would have thought that someone could have said ,"why not add some cement to the shingle prior to putting it back on the beach, this will make concrete and form the basis for a sea wall". I know that is simplistic, but you get my drift!

Despite all that Selsey is still a wonderful place to live. The climate is very kind to us and we miss a lot of the rain that the rest of Sussex seems to receive. The rain clouds tend to get diverted to the North of the Downs giving the Manhood peninsula its own micro climate. The road in and out of Selsey is a bit of an issue, but we can live with that, just. We have a good health center with about 8 Doctors who see to our needs when we develop broncoflumumples and three small supermarkets just about cater for our culinary needs. The major shop can be done in Chichester 9 miles away

As time goes on I hope to be able to show some old photographs of Selsey and compare them with the modern day equivalent. Also photos that may be newsworthy may also be shown, similar to the 'Storm' section already on display. The web site will, I hope, develop with time and make it more worth your while to visiting it.
